Preface
This proceedings presents the papers given at the Second International Meeting of Origami Science and Scientific Origami, with additional contributions. The meeting was held at Seian University of Art and Design and Japan International Academy of Municipalities in Otsu, Japan, from November 29 to December 2, 1994. As many as 356 people from 15 countries participated in the meeting. This meeting also complements the International KATACHI U SYMMETRY Symposium, Tsukuba, Japan, November 22-25, 1994.
The meeting consists of lecture sessions and table sessions. Most of the papers presented at the meeting are included in this volume. Unfortunately, some of the attractive presentations, especially talks at the table sessions, did not result in written papers and thus these do not appear in this volume. These presentations have been recorded on video-tapes and are preserved in the Library of Seian University of Art and Design. Parallel to these sessions, the meeting was supported by three attractive exhibitions. The Exhibition of Origami Works of Participants and the Exhibition of Origami in the Edo Era Books and Works (Courtesy of Mr. Satoshi Takagi) were held in the Library of Seian University of Art and Design. The Exhibition of Ogasawara-ryu Orikata was held at KyuChikurin-In, a beautiful temple located in Sakamoto, Otsu. The International Society for the Interdisciplinary Study of Symmetry (ISIS-Symmetry) has published the Issue of Symmetry (Vol.5, No.1, No.2, 1994) specifically dedicated to Origami at the time of this meeting. This publication includes a discerning essay, "Symmet-Origami in Art, Science, and Technology," by Prof. Niles Nagy. The editors appreciate this timely cooperation offered by ISIS-Symmetry.
This meeting came into being by the dedicated effort of many persons. For the purpose of bringing together the two different aspects of creation, art and science, in origami, the First Origami Science and Technology took place on December 6-7 1989 in the Casa di Ludovico Ariosto in Ferrara, Italy. Prof. Humiaki Huzita of University of Padova had done a beautiful job to organize the Meeting. The meeting proved to be quite successful as well as enjoyable and the resulting Proceedings became the classic reference on the subject. In 1979 Prof. Kodi Husimi and Mrs. Mitsue Husimi published a comprehensive book about the geometry of origami (Origami no Kikagaku, Tokyo, 1979, written in Japanese). This book had a great impact on the new generation of scholars, and initiated additional research in origami mathematics, especially in Japan. Several important contributions have been made on the subject in recent years. Under such circumstances, it seemed agreeable to have the second meeting in Japan, which is the motherland of origami. A virtual society called Origami Science Forum, by Prof. Koryo Miura and editors of this volume, was organized to promote the second meeting. With the cooperation of major members of international
origami societies, the plan of the second meeting was prepared.
Prof. Miura proposed the plan to Seian University of Art and Design. The President Yohei Izutsu quickly recognized that the meeting would be very valuable and in completely compliance with the purpose of Seian University of Art and Design. Then, Prof. Tohru Tanabe and Mr. Susumu Yamada established the meeting organization including University staffs, experts on the subject, and people from relevant organizations. The meeting and the publication were financially supported by Seian University of Art and Design, Shiga Prefecture, Otsu City and some private firms and individuals. On behalf of the Organizing Committee and all participants, the editors would like to express their sincere gratitude to these organizations, firms and individuals. Also, we would like to thank Prof. Humiaki Huzita for his advice on many phases of preparation of the meeting and effort in encouraging origami enthusiasts in the world to participate in the àmeeting.
With great regret we must inform the reader that Mr. Yohei Izutsu, President of the meeting, passed away on May 1996. We believe that, without his exalted ideas, this meeting would have not been realized. We shall always remember him not only as the head of the meeting, but as a man who enjoyed origami at the meeting.
It is our hope that this publication will be of value in spreading the idea of origami science and art to not only origami experts but also the general public.
